History of Kannada Letter ‘A’

The earliest form of akara, the first letter of the Kannada alphabet, is Q. B.C. 3rd century Ashoka inscriptions in Brahmi script. It should be noted that the Akara evolved from the Brahmi script of that time to its present form.

In Ashoka’s Brahmi script, it is three-lined and looks different from the present form. Q. Sh. Some of the changes observed in the Brahmi script of the 2nd century Satavahanas are noteworthy. The lower ends of the letter are curved.

At the top there are triangular ends of the Kadamba. 5th century Q. In the Kadamba script of the 5th century CE, a square head can be observed. In the 6th century inscriptions of the Badamichalukyas of the next century, it gives way to its present form.

In the inscriptions of the Rashtrakutas of the 9th century CE, the individual lines disappear and a single circular line is formed from end to end, which looks very close to the present form. The same form became fixed in the following centuries, and the present form for round shape was adopted in the 18th century AD.

This first letter of the Kannada alphabet represents two short vowels. One, the common ‘Vivruta Madhya Agola’ vowel; Another is the ‘Madhya Agola’ vowel found in the pronunciation of some.

The difference between these two can be observed in the pronunciation of words like ‘Atte’ (she is my mother-in-law’; sadly I am ‘mother-in-law’), father (he is my ‘father’; ‘father’ from shop).
